In the world of orthodontics, there are a plethora of options to straighten teeth. Many misaligned mouths choose Invisalign clear braces, the discreet option for straightening teeth. But in some cases, traditional metal wire braces are more successful.
When Braces Are Best
For some, their misalignment is severe enough to require metal braces. Although Invisalign is highly effective, the Invisalign method may take longer to correct some advanced issues. Other problems require the versatility of braces, such as rubber bands and different wire tensions. The following complications necessitate traditional braces:
- severe over or underbites
- advanced rotation of the teeth, by more than 20 degrees
- significant gaps between the teeth
- craniofacial anomalies
The permanence of braces may be a drawback for some, but for others, this is a benefit. Traditional braces cannot be misplaced, and thus are generally chosen for younger patients who may not be capable of regulating their treatment.
The Invisalign® Option
When utilized correctly by the right patient, Invisalign works faster than traditional braces. The ideal Invisalign patient will have only mild to moderate crookedness and hold themselves responsible for wearing their aligners at a minimum of 22 hours per day.
While Invisalign is efficient in a number of cases, traditional metal braces are still the most effective at treating more severe cases in which multiple issues are present.
Dentists Know Best
Altogether, this is a decision best made with advice from a dental professional. Only a dentist will be able to properly analyze your smile and determine which method will work best for your individual case.
